Online Backup – Mozy versus Carbonite

by Stuart Drew

As we move into a new decade, there are two online backup solutions which seem to be moving into position to dominate this ultra-competitive space. Both Mozy and Carbonite are renowned online backup solutions that have acheived their position due to the fact that they offer easy to use, low cost services.

So which one best suits you or your business? Let’s take a look at them, and maybe we’ll be able to decide.

Obviously, one of the fist considerations people have when choosing an online backup provider is the cost. These services are virtually identical when it comes to how much you’re going to need to pay to access their online backpupy goodness. Mozy comes in at $54.45 per year, with Carbonite being slightly (but negligibly) more expensive at $54.95. One difference between the two is that with Mozy, one can pay monthly, with no long term contract. The monthly cost for Mozy is $4.95, which works out at $54.90 a year, not actually much different from their yearly plan.

One significant benefit that Mozy provides over Carbonite is that they have a free plan with a limit of 2Gb of storage space, which is ample for some users, and a great way to test the service. Carbonite does offer a free trial, but it will only allow you access to the system for 15 days.

As for features, Mozy and Carbonite are pretty much line ball. Both allow you to back up only selected files and/or folders.

Reputation wise, again, both the services are pretty much on par, both seem to have solid reputations as far as outages and continuity of service.

In summary, there’s not much separating these two titans of the online backup industry. It comes dopwn to personal preference. If I were to suggest one of the two, I’d recommend giving Mozy a try, as they offer the free trial of up to 2Gb with no time limit.
